Becoming a mother is an exciting time in your life. However, sometimes even that adorable little face waking you up at midnight for some water can add to the stress of being a busy mom. Whether you stay home, or you’re out in the working world, being a mother is a 24/7 job. Trying to obtain a degree on top of keeping your household on point can be exhausting but rewarding. Medical career courses can be done online, allowing you flexibility at home and while working towards a new degree.

Many medical businesses also try to be flexible in scheduling so people don’t need to choose family over a career. More people are enrolling in online courses to begin or complete a current degree. For the last few years, the number of students in online programs has risen and continues to rise. There are plenty of options that work with your current family life and help you pay the bills. Here are three great medical careers for busy moms.

Women In Medicine

Historically, women stayed home and took care of the home and children. Women were thought of as delicate, weak, and unable to accomplish what men could do. Since the mid 19th century, women fought for equal rights from voting to support their families. Today women juggle home life and work, whether they are self-employed entrepreneurs, school nurses, or run large companies.

Since Elizabeth Blackwell (1849)  became the first certified doctor in the US, more women enter the healthcare field every year. They are the increasing majority of emerging or practicing physicians even when still facing similar obstacles from the past. However, the wave of females obtaining medical certifications and degrees aren’t slowing down, helping to reshape the once male-dominated field.

Medical Assistants

Medical assistants perform a variety of duties doctors offices, hospitals, clinics, and other medical environments. These individuals give important support to a medical office or facility. They help in organization and other tasks to give doctors and nurses more time to focus on patients.

They carry out the daily scheduling of appointments, assist doctors in recording data during an exam, and depending on the state, can give patients shots and medication. You must be CMA board certified by the AAMA after passing the certification exam. In 2018, the average yearly salary for medical assistants was about 33,610.

Dental Hygiene

For a busy parent, it can be difficult to spend additional hours at a university or college. Many schools have some courses online for their allied health degrees. It gives students another option to lighten the load of a full academic schedule and being away from your kids. EIC, for example, has options for completing a bachelor of dental hygiene. A dental hygienist has many responsibilities such as taking x rays, cleaning people’s teeth, removing about stitches, and creating the molds of teeth. Many offices have flexible hours for their employees, which benefits a busy parent’s schedule. Dental hygienists can also make an average of 72,000 a year with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

Holistic Medicine

Holistic or naturopathic physicians practice a more natural approach to healthcare. To become a licensed ND you must complete four to five years of schooling to become a primary care doctor. Many medical professionals combine both traditional and natural medicine to create a unique program for their patients. Some specialize in other areas like oncology, endocrinology, and mental health therapy which can be certified with online programs.

Naturopathic doctors can order tests such as a full body MRI, CT scans, or X-rays. They will refer patients to an MD if more traditional medicine is needed. Beginning salaries for holistic medical doctors can start at 40,000 and can grow to over 100 grand a year.
